Aa Ka Ma Band
In mid 1980s, a new wave of music emerged within the Tibetan community both in Tibet and in exile. For the first time, Tibetan people were listening to fusion music, folk songs accompanied by western percussion, guitar and synthesizer. This blend of folk melodies with western instruments were an instant hit within community.
Aa Ka Ma Band is an official contemporary musical band of Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. It was formed in 1989 to celebrate the conferment of Nobel Peace Prize to His Holiness the Dalai Lama with their debut song “Nobel Toeyang”. The band members consist of young musical enthusiasts from the institute.
Following this song, the band produced three albums which were well received by the community. Although many of the initial founding members have resigned, new members have taken up the mantle.
Aa Ka Ma, the name of the band is inspired by the three Tibetan alphabets envisioned by the search party at Lhamoi Lhatso lake, that eventually led to finding of His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.
