Workshop By Mr. Harry, Mr. Jean and Mr. Dalha
The Theatre Group of the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts was officially formed on 11th October 2024 under the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and much needed guidance and tutelage of Mr. Harry Furmann, a Theatre Director from Germany, who has been associated with TIPA since 2015, training and conducting series of workshops.
Harry Fuhrmann completed his theatrical studies in 1995 at the Academy of Music and Theatre Hamburg and worked for several years as an actor at various theaters in Germany. From 1998 – 2002, he studied directing at the Academy of Dramatic Arts “Ernst Busch” in Berlin. During this time, he also worked as assistant director to Peter Zadek at the Vienna Burg theater. In 2004, he founded the “Flying Fish” Theatre Group and realized an eight-month theatre journey through Nepal and India in 2005/06. The idea of the company is to go to the people, collect their stories and to develop plays out of them.

Prior to the formation of the theatre section in TIPA, all artistes underwent two intensive workshops, one conducted by Mr. Harry and another by Mr. Jean François, focusing on various elements of theatrical performance. Mr. François provided in-depth training on the modulation and fluctuation of voice in drama.

Following the establishment of the group, consisting of 9–10 members, Mr. Harry continued to provide specialized training sessions. Additionally, he conducted a four-day master class to further enhance the artistes’ understanding of theatre techniques.
Workshop By Mr. Vipan Bhardwaj
Further strengthening the Institute’s commitment to theatre education, from September 1 to 14, 2025, Indian drama artist Mr. Vipan Bhardwaj, a graduate from National School of Drama (NSD) conducted a comprehensive fourteen-day drama training workshop for both teachers and students. A distinguished graduate of India’s National School of Drama, Mr. Bhardwaj provided expert instruction on key aspects of drama, beginning with foundational physical exercises. He is widely recognized for his professional expertise and has conducted drama training programs across various regions of India.

The theatre section is planning for a new production which would address the dire political situation inside Tibet.
