TIPA performs in Prague, Czech Republic
Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) performed in Prague on 22nd May 2026 showcasing Tibet’s rich artistic heritage while drawing international attention to the preservation of Tibetan identity and culture.
The event took place in the historic parliamentary gardens of the Czech Republic and was attended by senior Czech officials, academics, Tibet supporters, members of civil society, and hundreds of local residents. More than 300 people participated in the gathering, reflecting continued Czech support for Tibet and its people.
Among the distinguished guests were the Vice President of the Czech Parliament, members of the Czech Parliamentary Tibet Support Group, representatives from research institutions, and officials from civil society organizations. Also present were representatives from the Office of Tibet in Switzerland, which helped organize the cultural tour.
TIPA artists performed traditional Tibetan opera, folk dances, and musical presentations, including the renowned Ache Lhamo opera tradition. The performances highlighted Tibet’s centuries-old cultural heritage and emphasized the uniqueness of Tibetan artistic identity.
Speaking before the performance, senior Czech parliamentary leaders welcomed the Tibetan delegation and reaffirmed the Czech Republic’s longstanding support for the Tibetan people and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They stressed the importance of preserving Tibetan culture, language, and religious freedom.
Representatives from the Office of Tibet noted that the event carried significance beyond cultural entertainment. They stated that the performance came at a time when Tibetan identity, language, religion, and cultural traditions continue to face increasing restrictions under Chinese government policies in Tibet.
Speakers also recalled the historic friendship between former Czech President Vaclav Havel and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, describing it as a relationship grounded in shared values of truth, democracy, compassion, and human dignity. Reference was also made to recent meetings between Czech President Petr Pavel, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and leaders of the Central Tibetan Administration during the president’s visit to India, which organizers described as an important gesture of solidarity with the Tibetan people.
Organizers said the Prague performance served as a response to attempts by Beijing to portray Tibetan culture as part of Chinese culture. By presenting authentic Tibetan opera and traditional performing arts through artists living in exile, TIPA sought to demonstrate the independent and historic character of Tibetan civilization.
The Director of TIPA thanked the Czech Parliament, organizers, and attendees for their support and hospitality. He also introduced the history and mission of the Institute and explained the objectives of the troupe’s ongoing European cultural tour.
Audience members included parliamentarians, students, non-governmental organizations, members of the Tibetan diaspora, and Czech citizens. Many participants expressed admiration for Tibet’s nonviolent struggle and for the His Holiness’s message of compassion and peace.
Organizers said the event helped strengthen ties between the Czech and Tibetan peoples while reaffirming a shared commitment to human rights, freedom, and the preservation of Tibetan cultural heritage.
At the conclusion of the program, TIPA representatives presented ceremonial Tibetan scarves and commemorative gifts to honored guests and expressed hope for future cultural collaborations and invitations to international festivals in the Czech Republic.
