TIPA Concludes European Cultural Tour with Successful Finale in Switzerland
As part of this year’s celebrations marking His Holiness’s Ghoton and the observance of the Year of Compassion, the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) carried out a cultural tour under the leadership of its Director, bringing together 26 members including the Artistic Director, instructors, and performers. The tour wrapped up on the 30th and 31st at the Wadenswil community hall near Zurich, where the Tibetan communities of Switzerland and Liechtenstein hosted a vibrant evening of folk songs, Lhamo (Tibetan opera), storytelling, and contemporary Akama music.
Both evenings welcomed distinguished guests of honor, including the Khenrinpoche of Rikon Monastery and two representatives from the Swiss Office of Tibet, alongside other invited dignitaries. The performances drew an enthusiastic audience of more than 500, reflecting strong public appreciation for Tibetan cultural heritage. The opening night featured a welcome address by Nyedul Gyatso, President of the Swiss and Liechtenstein Tibetan Community, followed by remarks from Swiss Office of Tibet representative Phuntsok Chokyi, who outlined the tour’s background and objectives. TIPA’s Director Dhondup Tsering then extended warm thanks to the Swiss Office of Tibet, local community leaders, and the general public for their generous support throughout the final leg of the journey.
Spanning five European countries and England, the tour featured all 26 TIPA performers. The Swiss and Liechtenstein Tibetan communities generously covered the travel expenses of 24 participants. Local Tibetan associations coordinated performances in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, while the Swiss Office of Tibet directly managed all arrangements for the stops in Bratislava, Slovakia, and Prague, Czech Republic.
Beyond entertainment, the tour carried a deeper cultural and political significance. Amid ongoing concerns about the Chinese Communist Party’s systematic campaign to suppress Tibetan language, culture, and identity — including efforts to promote a distorted version of Tibetan heritage internationally — TIPA’s performances offered a powerful counter-narrative. Founded by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and now in its 67th year, TIPA has long served as a guardian of authentic Tibetan artistic traditions, preserving and transmitting them with the support of the Tibetan administration and generations of dedicated elders. This tour brought that living heritage directly to Tibetan communities and international audiences across Europe.
A particularly memorable highlight came on May 24, 2026, when TIPA joined the German Tibetan Community at the International Cultural Festival in Berlin. Performing alongside approximately 76 groups representing 46 countries, TIPA artists staged a 90-minute showcase of Yak dance, Do Drung, and Ralpa along a one-and-a-half-kilometer street procession. The performance drew a crowd of roughly 4,500 in person, with many more tuning in via live broadcast. At its conclusion, the audience rose to their feet and chanted “Tibet!” — a moment that moved performers and observers alike.
TIPA’s recognition at the Berlin Carnival 2026 marks a historic achievement. Performed as an offering to His Holiness and as a testament to the resilience of Tibetans both inside and outside Tibet, this accomplishment on an international stage stands as one of the tour’s most enduring contributions to the global awareness of the Tibetan cause.
