TIPA’s Cultural Tour in Vienna Concludes Successfully with Enthusiastic Audience Response
The European cultural tour of the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) concluded successfully in Vienna, the capital of Austria, with an inspiring cultural performance held at the Veraastaltungszentrum Convention Center. As part of the ongoing Europe tour, the TIPA delegation, led by the Director of TIPA and comprising 26 members including the Artistic Director, teachers, and artists, traveled from Frankfurt, Germany, to Vienna on 4 May 2026 under the coordination of Mr. Phuntsok Tobgyal, UN Advocacy Officer.
The grand cultural performance was held on the evening of 9 May in the presence of His Eminence Ling Rinpoche, Thinley Chukki, Representative of the Office of Tibet – Geneva, Ms. Zimmermann Elisabeth, Former President of the Save Tibet Organization, Ms. Mag Husnik Andrea – Panchen Losang Chogyen Gelug Center, Prof. Gerhard Weissgrab, President of OBR, and The President and executive members of the Austrian Tibetan Association, including former and current committee members, as well as local Tibetans and supporters, also attended the event. Around 350 audience members gathered to witness the vibrant presentation of authentic Tibetan performing arts.
The artists presented a series of traditional Tibetan songs and a live cultural performance titled Dance from the Roof of the World, along with the unique and classical Tibetan opera story Gyalsa and Balsa. To help international audiences better understand the performances, the cultural program and opera story were introduced in both Tibetan and German. The audience deeply appreciated the richness, authenticity, and spiritual depth of Tibetan culture, while many young Tibetans expressed renewed pride and emotional connection to their ancestral heritage.
The event became especially meaningful as His Eminence Ling Rinpoche was visiting the region for religious activities and graciously accepted the invitation extended by the organizers. The program commenced with welcome remarks from Mr. Kunga, President of the Austrian Tibetan Association, who introduced the objectives of TIPA’s Europe tour. The Director of TIPA expressed heartfelt gratitude to His Eminence Kyabje Ling Rinpoche for his gracious presence, describing it as a great blessing and inspiration for both the artists and the public.
During the tour, TIPA representatives also visited various European countries under the jurisdiction of the Office of Tibet – Geneva to introduce the aims of the cultural tour and raise awareness about Tibetan performing arts. Representative Thinley Chukki thanked the Tibetan communities and supporters across Europe for their generous assistance in making the tour successful. Addressing international guests in English, she emphasized the importance of preserving authentic Tibetan culture and encouraged continued support for the Tibetan cause.
The Vienna performance was jointly organized by the Office of Tibet – Geneva and the Austrian Tibetan Association with strong support from local Tibetan communities. Significantly, this marked the first visit by TIPA artists to the region in 35 years, drawing an overwhelming response from the Tibetan community and supporters. The tour also coincided with the celebration of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday and the Year of Compassion.
The cultural tour was made possible through the support of the Office of Tibet – Geneva, the Tibetan Communities of Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and various local Tibetan associations that provided logistical support and organizational arrangements. Beyond entertaining audiences, the tour served as an important platform to preserve and promote authentic Tibetan culture and to educate international audiences about Tibet’s ancient artistic traditions and heritage.
At the conclusion of the program, TIPA presented traditional gratitude scarves and commemorative gifts to distinguished guests and to the outgoing and incoming presidents of the Austrian Tibetan Association. The ceremonial presentations were made by the Thinley Chukki – Representative office of Tibet – Geneva, marking a memorable conclusion to a successful and culturally significant event.
