Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts Marks 67th Anniversary yesterday
Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) marked its 67th anniversary on August 11 with a commemorative program featuring a traditional Tibetan song and dance competition at the institute.
Chief Guest Justice Yeshe Wangmo, Chief Justice of the Tibetan Supreme Justice Commission, and Special Guest Lobsang Jinpa, Secretary of the Gaden Phodrang Office, attended the event along with officials of the Central Tibetan Administration, former officials, representatives of the Government of India’s liaison office, representatives of Tibetan and non-Tibetan organizations, former TIPA members and invited guests.
The program opened with a minute of silence in remembrance of more than 100 Tibetans who have died through self-immolation in connection with the Tibetan cause. TIPA Director Dhondup Tsering delivered the introductory remarks, while Artistic Director Tenzin Phuntsok introduced the judges for the cultural song and dance competition.
Two teams presented eight performances featuring traditional Tibetan music and dance from regions including Ngari, Lhokha, Lithang and Derge. The Gyalu team won the competition by a one-percentage-point margin, with Justice Yeshe Wangmo presenting the award. Lobsang Jinpa presented honoraria to the judges and certificates to two senior artists who had completed their master’s programs.
In his address, Lobsang Jinpa highlighted the centuries-old history of Tibetan performing arts, including traditions associated with the reign of King Songtsen Gampo and the development of Ache Lhamo, traditionally attributed to the 14th-century master Thangtong Gyalpo. He also noted that Nangma and Toeshay songs originated in Ngari before spreading to central Tibet and highlighted the contributions of 20th-century musicians and performers.
Lobsang Jinpa said His Holiness the Dalai Lama founded TIPA to preserve Tibetan cultural identity and promote it internationally. He praised TIPA’s continuing work to preserve traditional songs, dances and theatrical productions and pass them on to the younger generations.
The competition followed 40-days training program from July 1 to August 10, during which students researched traditional songs, consulted senior singers and cultural practitioners, and adapted older musical traditions for stage performances.
The anniversary program concluded with a vote of thanks, refreshments for guests and a showcase of TIPA’s continuing efforts to preserve and transmit Tibetan performing arts.
