The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts’ 4th Summer Tibetan Performing Arts Training Program Concludes Successfully
This morning at 10:30 AM, the closing ceremony of the 4th summer Tibetan performing arts training program was held at the auditorium of the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA). The chief guest of the occasion was the Honorable Secretary of the Department of Education, Karma Choeying, and the event was also attended by the parents and family members of the students who participated in this year’s training, along with TIPA staff members.
At the start of the ceremony, the Director of the institute welcomed the chief guest and all the students, parents, and family members who had come specially from abroad to attend the training. He spoke about TIPA’s objectives and noted that interest in Tibet’s unique performing arts among young Tibetans living abroad has been growing steadily. Since 2023, this training has been organized to coincide with the summer holidays of young Tibetans raised abroad. What began with around thirty students has now grown into this fourth summer training program.
During the training, teachers dedicated their full effort to teaching the students the Tibetan language as well as Tibetan opera arts, musical instruments, dance, and folk songs. They also encouraged the students to do their utmost to preserve and promote Tibetan performing arts and their own identity when they return to their respective place of residence. Following this, the students who took part in the training performed around twelve different pieces, including song and dance performances, instrumental music, and traditional folk songs.
On this occasion, the chief guest presented certificates and ceremonial scarves (khatags) to all the students who completed the training, and addressed the gathering. He said it was wonderful to see the students take such great interest in learning the Tibetan performing arts, and that the support given by parents was commendable. He also thanked the TIPA Instructors, who, under the Institute’s guidance, had worked diligently for a month to teach the students song, dance, and instrumental performance, resulting in today’s excellent presentation. He noted that this work constitutes the preservation of Tibetan culture. Given the current dire situation in which the Chinese government is destroying Tibetan religion and culture, he stressed that safeguarding and preserving Tibetan culture is of vital importance. He also cited His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s guidance that one should hold on to hope while preparing for hardship, noting that the Tibetan struggle is the struggle of an entire people. He said the responsibility for protecting Tibetan identity rests with every Tibetan, and that instilling the language, religion, and culture passed down from their ancestors into the hearts of young Tibetans must begin at home — if parents speak to their children in Tibetan and cultivate this habit, Tibetan identity can be protected and preserved.
Under the Administration of the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts and in coordination with the summer holidays of young Tibetans residing abroad, a one-month Tibetan performing arts training program which began on July 1, 2026, marking the fourth such training session has concluded successfully.
