Sikyong Penpa Tsering inaugurates the new Thangtong Building of the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts
On April 17, 2026, Sikyong Penpa Tsering officially inaugurated the newly constructed “Thangtong Building” of the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. The project was completed with support from the Central Tibetan Administration, German Aid to Tibetans, and the TCF, among others.
The inauguration ceremony began at 10:00 a.m. with prayers and consecration rituals conducted by monks from Gyutoe Monastery. Following the religious ceremony, Sikyong Penpa Tsering and former president of German Aid to Tibetans, Heide Meyer, jointly inaugurated the new facility. Guests and supporters were then given a guided tour of the premises.
A formal function was subsequently held in the institute’s hall, attended by representatives of supporting organizations, architects, engineers, and senior officials. During the event, the institute’s Director presented an overview of the project, outlining its objectives, long-term vision, and implementation process. The report highlighted the building’s sustainable design, including measures addressing climate change and durability.
The newly completed complex spans approximately 22,232 square feet and includes 36 residential units for artists, comprising single-bedroom, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments. The total construction cost is around 10 crore, with 55% funded by the Central Tibetan Administration and 40% by German Aid to Tibetans. Additional support from the Tibetan Children’s Fund helped install solar-powered systems for water heating, lighting, and street illumination.
During the ceremony, Sikyong Penpa Tsering presented a certificate of appreciation to Heide Meyer in recognition of her more than 40 years of dedicated support to the Tibetan community in exile. Tokens of gratitude were also distributed to all contributors involved in the project.
In her remarks, Heide Meyer spoke about the long-standing partnership between German Aid to Tibetans and the Tibetan community, particularly in supporting cultural initiatives like the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts.
Addressing the gathering, Sikyong Penpa Tsering emphasized the importance of preserving Tibetan performing arts as a vital cultural heritage passed down through generations. He urged the community to value and support such institutions, encouraging parents to motivate their children to pursue studies in traditional arts.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining the newly constructed facility to ensure its long-term benefit. Expressing gratitude to German Aid to Tibetans, he acknowledged the organization as one of the oldest and most significant supporters of the Tibetan community, noting that many infrastructure projects of the institute have been made possible through its assistance.
The ceremony concluded with a group photograph of dignitaries, donors, and staff, followed by a luncheon, marking the successful completion of the inauguration event.
