TIPA’s 66th Anniversary Marked with Yarkyi Competition and Celebration of Compassion
On the 11th day of the 8th month of 2025 (Tibetan year 2152, Wood Snake year), the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) commemorated its 66th anniversary with a special celebration on August 27, 2025 (Monday), coinciding with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Lhakar Day. The program, held at 3 PM in the TIPA auditorium, honored three significant occasions: the founding anniversary of TIPA, His Holiness’s teachings, and the Year of Compassion.
The highlight of the event was the Yarkyi cultural competition between the Gyalu and Nyönpa groups, featuring dance, song, and drama performances. After a series of solo songs, performance pieces, and storytelling acts centered on compassion, the Gyalu group emerged victorious.
The ceremony was graced by Sikyong Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration as the chief guest, with Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile Khenpo Sonam Tenphel as the special guest, and Tibetan Supreme Justice Commissioner Mrs. Yeshi Wangmo as the guest of honor. Also present were CTA officials, settlement leaders, jury members, and invited guests.
The program began with a welcome address by TIPA Director Mr. Dhondup Tsering, followed by the introduction of judges by Artistic Director Tenzin Phuntsok. Later, Chief Justice Commissioner Yeshi Wangmo presented ceremonial scarves and certificates to newly trained artists, while Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel offered appreciation scarves to the judges. The Sikyong congratulated the winners and awarded prizes to participants of the summer festival competition “YARKYI 2025”
In his keynote address, the Sikyong reflected on His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s vision in establishing TIPA to preserve and safeguard Tibetan performing arts in exile. He emphasized the invaluable contributions of elder generations and called upon today’s artists and teachers to continue serving with dedication. He also highlighted challenges in student enrollment, expressing hope that forthcoming adjustments to admission policies would attract more youth to join TIPA.
This year’s festival stood out with performances inspired by compassion, moving the audience deeply. The Sikyong praised the tireless efforts of both groups who rehearsed for over a month, as well as those who supported the event through lyrics, choreography, and mentorship.
The celebration concluded with Secretary Sonam Chophel’s vote of thanks, followed by tea and refreshments, bringing the auspicious YARKYI Festival to a meaningful close.
